Stratford International firstly played a pivotal role in the Thames Gateway Development Project and subsequently had a hand in securing the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The Stratford Box, which now houses two International and two Domestic high-speed rail platforms, was excavated and constructed by London & Continental Railways. Spoil as a result of this excavation was utilised to lay a raised foundation for another project – Westfield Stratford, the largest urban shopping centre in Europe.
